treatment for you.
Owner John Penn Turner, LPC, LSATP, began his work in Richmond, VA with the St. Mary’s Hospital inpatient substance addiction unit in 1992, while in the Master’s in Counseling Program at the Medical College of Virginia. In 1993, John Penn moved to the Charlottesville, VA area and began working in the Waynesboro Community Hospital on the Recovery Choice unit. This unit provided inpatient, outpatient and continuing care services to newly recovering alcoholics and addicts. During his tenure there, he received his M.S. in Counseling from MCV. In 1996, the Waynesboro Community Hospital and the Staunton Hospital (King’s Daughters) merged to one facility, Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville, VA. John Penn moved into this new facility and worked until he transferred to Region Ten Community Services Board, in Charlottesville, in 1999. While with Region Ten, John Penn worked as a provider for outpatient services facilitating groups for adults in early recovery. He also provided individual and couples counseling for mental health. In addition, John Penn worked as a Program Manager, supervising direct services staff, both administratively and clinically. He was also a part of the restructuring of the administration and client services, which was begun to streamline and ease access to services.
John Penn was licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Health Professionals as a Professional Counselor (LPC) in September of 1998 and as a Substance Abuse Treatment Practitioner (LSATP) in September of 2000. In 2012 he was certified by NBCC as an NCC. In 2014 he was licensed in New Mexico by the New Mexico Counseling and Therapy Practice Board as a Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LPCC) and as a Licensed Alcohol & Drug Counselor (LADAC). Now as a sole practitioner, John Penn has opened a practice designed to offer services of all kinds to individuals, couples and groups with a variety of needs. John Penn offers a variety of treatment techniques to address issues of grief, loss, terminal illness, anxiety, depression, sexual orientation, addictions, and others. He is certified in the Grief Recovery Method which helps provide effective tools for the emotional journey of grieving. He is certified in Accelerated Resolution Therapy as a MASTER A*R*T Practitioner, The Braddock Body Process and EMDR. These techniques are specially designed to treat trauma. They are effective ways to process issues of trauma, and are less likely to cause these clients to re-experience their trauma. He is also certified as an ADS (Acu-Detox Specialist). This technique is an acupuncture protocol that assists the body in early detox from drugs and alcohol.
